Esperanza Rising

My love for this book is at an all time high. If you teach 4th, 5th, or even 6th grade this is a PERFECT book for you. It is rich with vocabulary and symbolism.

 I am sad it took me this long to read.

I honestly think I struggled with word problems until I decided to become a teacher. WHY did no one ever teach me this amazing strategy? 

C.U.B.E.S. 

So many hours of my life could have been saved. Literally. 

Using this strategy in my classroom has saved me and my students heartache. 

Any word problem we come across, CUBES is always the answer. 

First we circle all of the numbers,

next underline the question, 

then box in all of the key words.

After we have all of the key parts of the word problem identified, we evaluate the problem by drawing/working it out. 

The final step is to solve and check your problem. I always have my students write about how they got to their answer.

 If they can't tell me how they did it, they don't truly understand how to do it!
